2.2 THE DEVELOPMENT OF FEUDALISM IN WESTERN EUROPE

1. Rome was most of Europe for 500 years
2. Rest of Europe controlled by barbarians and they destroyed Rome
3. Franks(modern-day France) was one of most powerful groups because created new style of warfare
4. Knights on horseback fought wars
5. Lords need loyalty of knights in exchange for land and privileges
6. In 481 C.E., at age 15, a young warrior named Clovis became ruler of Franks
7. Clovis helped Franks become Christians
8. Clovis' grandson, Charlemagne, ruled for 40 years, from 768 to 814 C.E., and was 6'4", incredibly tall for his time
9. Charlemagne united all of the Christian lands of Europe into single empire
10. Charlemagne's empire was built with the help of the pope, Leo III, who also crowned Charlemagne emperor for helping the pope
11. Charlemagne's empire was destroyed after his death in 814 C.E., but came back under the development of feudalism
12. In 9th and 10th centuries, Muslims, from Africa who follow the Islam religion; Magyars, from Asia; and Vikings, fierce warriors from Norway and Denmark threaten Western Europe
13. To protect themselves, the people of Western Europe developed feudalism
2.3 FEUDALISM DURING MEDIEVAL TIMES

2.6 DAILY LIFE OF KNIGHTS:

2. Ate breakfast
3. Had a weapons practice at the quintian and pell
4. Engage in warfare strategy and knowledge of weapons
5. Prayers and a bite to eat
6. Understood the rules of Chivalry and courtly love
7. Increased horsemanship and joined lords on hunting and hawking trips or inspecting the estate
8. Evening prayer than to supper
9. Enjoyed entertainment
10. Prayers then to bed
2.7 PEASANTS DURING FEUDAL TIMES:

1. Peasants were given land in trade for working on a manor.
2. They had to tend livestock, grow crops, and work as carpenters.
3. In addition to giving the lord most of the crops they had grown, peasants also had to pay a tax to the church of 10% of all that they grew.
4. Men were mostly the ones that worked as carpenters and shoemakers, but men and women equally worked on the fields.
5. Women raised and taught their children until they were old enough to work.
6. Peasants were either freemen or serfs.
7. Freemen were allowed to leave the manor when done worked on their small part of land.
8. Serfs were forced to stay and work at the manor as well as their children if they took an oath to the lord.
9. Serfs had to stay in the manor, but in times of war or low growth of crops, the lord could give them a small amount of food or protection.
10. During wars, freemen were left to help themselves, and if crops were scarce, they could starve.
